It's easy to recognize what you can't do. The Catalog for Giving is about what you can do.

Letter to Nonprofits Serving Youth in Boulder County

February 19, 2003

Dear Friends:

We are pleased to share the news that the Community Foundation Serving Boulder County and the Brett Family Foundation have decided to proceed with a second edition of The Catalog for Giving – Boulder County.

Originally designed and published in New York City in 1994, The Catalog has made its way to four communities across the country, including ours. We released Boulder County’s first edition in October 2001 and since have raised more than $95,000 for the 12 participating organizations. Please see the attached background pages for details.

Our goal is to create a second edition that will again tell the stories of independent grassroots nonprofits working hard to address the issues facing children and youth in Boulder County. We hope to broaden awareness and raise unrestricted contributions for the organizations included.

All groups selected for inclusion in The Catalog must meet all the following criteria:

  • Be located in and provide direct services to disadvantaged youth/children within Boulder County;
  • Have an independent IRS letter of 501(c)(3) determination;
  • Operate with an annual budget between $25,000 and $1 million;
  • Not be part of a national organization;
  • Have no paid full-time fundraiser or development officer on staff

While organizations that were included in The Catalog’s first edition are certainly eligible, we encourage any nonprofit that meets the qualifications to apply.

The Brett Family Foundation, The Community Foundation, and community volunteers will cover all outright expenses of creating and marketing The Catalog (staff time, design, photography, copywriting and printing). As a result, 100% of incoming contributions will be passed on to the selected organizations.

It is important to know, however, that organizations chosen for The Catalog must agree to participate in bi-monthly meetings, distribution efforts and possibly a collaborative special event.

Interested organizations should complete the enclosed application (in PDF format) and return it to The Community Foundation Serving Boulder County no later than Friday, April 11, 2003, by 5:00 pm. Please include all requested attachments.

Our hope is to release the final product before Thanksgiving 2003 in preparation for year-end giving. Our Selection Committee will begin reviewing applications in April, make selected site-visits in May, and complete their final decisions in June 2003.

We look forward to receiving your application. If your organization does not fit the requirements, we hope you will pass this request on to one that might.

Sincerely,

Peggy Driscoll and Morgan Rogers
