The Stan Black Award
The Stan Black Award is named for one of the founders of The Community Foundation. Stan is retired now, but continues to be an active participant in a number of causes, both in the Boulder area and overseas. We present this award annually with the sponsorship of the law firm of Hutchinson, Black & Cook and the additional support individual donors. The award is intended to honor an individual who, like Stan Black, has given a lifetime of "time, treasure and talent" to the community.
The 2009 Stan Black Award honoree
is:
Sophie (Marsha) Walker
When Sophie (Marsha) Walker first came to Boulder in 1993, she worked two summers gleening fields for Community Food Share and got involved in the Partner's Mentoring Program. Once here full time, she became involved on the board of Open Studios, and then the Board of Growing Gardens where she saw the creation of Cultiva! She was a founding memeber of Social Venture Partners, and from that, came her involvement with Family Learning Center where she became a mentor to little girl, who is now not so little, and in college.
Medicine Horse Program was a passion for Sophie and she has seen it grow from a mom & pop organization that reached a few kids and families, to a nationally recognized therapeutic facility serving nearly 1000 clients this year. For many years she has counseled people one-on-one, and through Life Long Learning, who are struggling to make amends.
Sophie is on the Advisory Board of BoldeReach, the Boulder International Film Festival, and the International Fringe. She supports her husband in many facets of the Colorado Music Festival, and she and Jack frequently open their home for not-for-profit and political events.
Additionally, Sophie supports Blue Sky Bridge, Stories on Stage, People's Clinic, Boulder Valley Women's Health Center, CU School of Music and their Adopt a Student program, and the Conference on World Affairs. Her other passions, besides her husband, family and friends, are creating life altering innovations (tongue in cheek. Examples on demand!), painting large canvases, writing short stories, and travel...hither and yon.
