Demographics

In 2007, The Community Foundation contracted with the Community Resource Center to conduct a baseline study and focus groups to document the current demographics of Boulder County non-profit organizations. The study reports on demographics of staff, Board, clients, and volunteers to determine the participation and level of engagement with communities of color. The Community Foundation compiles data on Boulder County trends and needs to educate donors, decision-makers, and the community. Our Boulder County Trends report indicated that one in four Boulder County residents identifies as a person of color. Yet, a recent informal survey of nearly 100 organizations applying to the Foundation’s Community Trust grant process took a look at diversity within Boulder area non profits. The findings indicated to us that the leadership (both executive staff and trustees) of Boulder County non profits were not reflective of the population residing in Boulder County and provided few opportunities for under-represented populations to participate. In addition, preliminary results from the Boulder County Public Health Dept.’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey indicate that Latino middle schoolers are at significantly greater risk than non-Hispanic white students of the same age.
