Frieda
Frieda was born in Mexico and moved to California with her family when she was five. Her father was a migrant worker. Now a U.S. resident, Frieda has lived in Longmont since she was nine.

She attended Columbine Elementary School, Heritage Middle School and Skyline High School. In sixth grade, Frieda joined Alternative for Youth’s Girls Group. Talking about the Girls Group, Frieda said, “I learned how to communicate better with others and girls and girls of different ethnicities. I had better relationships with my friends.”

Through Girls Group, Frieda was introduced to Homework Club and became a middle school Homework Club tutor at the end of ninth grade. Frieda is such an asset to AFY that she was hired as a paid Homework Club student helper. Frieda credits AFY with helping her to improve her self-esteem, overcome her shyness and to set goals for herself. Frieda is attending Metro State and has been the first in her family to go to college, an achievement that her parents are proud of.
