COLLABORATION WITH CIUDAD GUZMÁN HIGHLIGHTS EL DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS AT THE LONGMONT MUSEUMThe Longmont Museum & Cultural Center’s 8th annual El Día de los Muertos celebration brings artists from Longmont’s sister city of Ciudad Guzmán, Jalisco, Mexico, to Longmont, to participate in an exhibition and public program at the Museum. A series of lectures, performances, and workshops culminates in the Family Celebration on Saturday, November 1, from 11 am to 5 pm. All events and programs are free.
In many parts of Mexico, South America, and the United States, El Día de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, celebrated on November 1 and 2, is a time to honor and celebrate deceased loved ones. Community participation is an essential part of this holiday that is full of life, reflection, food, family, and fun.
Two artists from Ciudad Guzmán, Felicitas Zamorano Gonzales and Hector Orozco Garcia, will set up a large altar typical of those in their region, alongside the community altars that have been a part of the Museum’s exhibit La Ofrenda de los Muertos: Honoring the Days of the Dead for the last several years. This year, the exhibition, which runs from October 11 to November 9, 2008, explores how El Día de los Muertos is celebrated in different regions of Mexico and will feature the work of Denver artist, Jerry Vigil. The mayor of Ciudad Guzmán, Presidente Dagoberto Moreno Leal, will visit Longmont for the opening of this exhibit. PUBLIC PROGRAMSThe exhibition opens to the public on Saturday, October 11, with two free programs from 10 am to 2 pm at the Museum. The artists from Ciudad Guzmán will build a temporary altar in the Museum’s courtyard, with translation provided to explain the symbolism and meaning of the altar. Julie Marino and Rita Wallace of Cultural Interpretations will perform an authentic and interactive re-enactment of a trip to the cemetery on El Día de los Muertos.
On Saturday, November 1, the Museum and its community partners invite everyone to come and celebrate El Día de los Muertos. Activities include decorating sugar skulls, paper flowers and El Día de los Muertos temporary tattoos. Music and dance performances go on from 12:30 to 2:50 pm, headlined by Mariachi Vasquez at 12:30. Traditional food, including pan de muertos, chicken mole, tamales, and Mexican hot chocolate, is served in the Museum’s classrooms.
Additional programs related to El Día de los Muertos occur throughout October. Visit the Longmont Museum’s website, www.ci.longmont.co.us/museum for a complete listing. The celebration of El Día de los Muertos is made possible by the Friends of the Longmont Museum, SCFD, the Lynn and Helen Clark Fund, the Community Foundation Serving Boulder County, Longmont Sister Cities Association, Boulder County, the Longmont Multicultural Action Plan, and supported by many community organizations and businesses.
