Grantmaking in Social Justice: Looking Beyond the Symptoms A Profile on Brad Armstrong and The Bamboo Fund

Grantmaking in Social Justice: Looking Beyond the Symptoms A Profile on Brad Armstrong and The Bamboo Fund

It is fitting perhaps that Brad Armstrong, founder of the Bamboo Fund of The Community Foundation, jokingly calls his social justice grantmaking “faith-based funding.” Although he harkens from Midland, Texas – a wealthy and conservative oil community that is home to President George W. Bush – Armstrong is not referring to anything related to organized religion.

Volunteering brings many people great joy, sense of contribution and sense of community. Participating in activities is leading by example.

Circle of Care came into my life when my life needed healing. I had just lost a child to illness and was deeply despondent. I decided to volunteer for CoC and an amazing thing happened.

The love and support I received from the elders in our community helped me through my grief process and to heal. I realized that I needed them in my life more than or as much as they needed me. I am forever grateful for what the Circle of Care of Care Community provides for people of all ages and for what it did for me when I needed it most.

I decided to volunteer at Greenwood because I want to help injured wildlife.  It's my belief that people have pushed wildlife to extreme circumstances by our development of land and agriculture and have made it harder and harder for a lot of species to survive.

For me it's the interaction with other people that makes it all worthwhile.

Volunteering has always been a way of opening up my heart. To be able to volunteer and do something positive is a real gift to me.
