2004 Grantees
Alternatives for Youth, Inc.    $8,000
Funding this year will allow Alternatives for Youth, Inc. in Longmont to expand its existing computer lab. Classes will be provided to young people and their parents to help improve academic skills, and teach basic computer and multi-media design skills. The expanded computer facility will mean more access to computers to conduct research, strengthen math skills, write papers and assignments, and improve language skills. The computer lab will address the growing technology gap that currently exists for many of the families served by AFY.

Anam Chara    $8,000
This grant will allow Anam Chara to obtain hospice licensure, enabling the organization to give its full scope of physical, emotional and spiritual death passage care for its residents and families, and offer these clients a full continuity of caregivers. In-house hospice services will allow Anam Chara to further their mission of “nurturing a conscious journey through the passages of life” for each member of its community.

Attention Homes    $7,000
Support this year is for Attention Homes' Volunteer and Mentorship program. Trained volunteers and mentors come into Attention Homes to offer the teens there a new openness, sense of life, possibility of the future and inspiration. Those who run the program observe that these volunteers can put their own passion into action for the kids. Volunteers can show youth what a positive role model is, listen to them, and guide them. Millennium Trust funding will expand the current volunteer base.

Boulder Public Library Foundation-Grillo Health Information Center    $2,500
The Grillo Health Information Center, which is housed in the Boulder Public Library, is a resource center for people to research medical issues and treatments. Funding will allow Grillo Health Information Center to expand its materials to include increased Spanish language resources. In partnership with the Family Learning Center, Grillo will both increase bilingual service at the public library site and have a presence at the Family Learning Center. This new site will allow members of the community access to reliable and trustworthy health information with assistance in a manner that is both comforting and respectful in both English and Spanish.

Center for People with Disabilities    $5,000
Because we live in such a generous community, those in the nonprofit world often have the good, but nonetheless challenging, problem of what to do when someone donates something useful at a time when it isn't immediately needed. This grant will help in the construction of an on-site storage unit for the purpose of storing donated medical equipment and household goods that will ultimately benefit the center's clients. Having this on-site storage unit will allow CPWD to improve its ability to meet the needs of its community.

Center for ReSource Conservation    $7,000
Support this year is for a workshop that will house a new “Value Added” program at the Center's ReSource Sales Yard. The Value Added program takes a waste product and turns it into an item of value by applying equipment and craftsmanship. An example might be to take a piece of wood that has been painted or stained – which would normally be garbage – and making it into sellable furniture. The program will help sustain the Center for ReSource Conservation through its less profitable months by creating a revenue stream that us not weather dependent and will also use creative means to reuse valuable materials that would otherwise end up in the landfill.

Colorado Music Festival    $2,000
This grant will fund the Festival's SmARTS Partners, a program designed to provide opportunities for local businesses to sponsor the Colorado Music Festival, Colorado Shakespeare Festival and the Colorado Chautauqua Association. With one sponsorship, local and small businesses will have the opportunity to become involved and have exposure at all three of Boulder's premiere summer arts festivals through this program.

The Counseling Center    $8,000
The Counseling Center will use funding to initiate and implement a capacity building program. Components of their plan include increasing community awareness; number of board members, interns, and volunteers; and educating board members and staff. The goal of these efforts it to open new avenues for donations and fundraising efforts and better support the variety of therapeutic programs and services offered.

Eco-Cycle    $6,325
This grant will be used to allow this progressive community recycling group to recycle yet another throw-away: books. Using Millennium Trust funding, Eco-Cycle will build an engineering sorting platform for a new book shearing and recycling program. In addition to enabling the recycling of books, it will offer the organization the ability to divert books for an even higher use, reuse.

Growing Gardens of Boulder County    $5,000
Support this year is for the construction of a community greenhouse. The greenhouse will make possible the expansion of Growing Gardens current programs, which are primarily only during the summer, to a year-round program. This expansion will greatly increase the number of people served. The greenhouse will also serve as a center for the community to learn and participate in growing plants for healthy food.

HospiceCare of Boulder and Broomfield Counties    $2,000
Funding is for Hospice's Self-Managed Care Teams projects, a new model for care designed to enhance end-of-life care in our community. Hospice developed this model in anticipation of both an aging population and an impending nursing shortage. The goal is to shift reliance from nursing care management to a circle of staff caregivers including social workers, chaplains, certified nursing assistants and therapists – in addition to nurses. Tapping into the expertise of the collective team results in more time and better care for each patient served.

Nederland Area Seniors    $1,900
This grant will be used to organize a community picnic. With cooperation of local organizations, businesses, Town Hall and the Chamber of Commerce, Nederland Area Seniors will gather people for a lively evening of entertainment, interaction and food. The evening will combine a potluck and cookbook sale with a food drive for the local distribution pantry.

Teaching Peace    $1,650
The Boulder County Restorative Justice Collaboration is an innovative partnership between many restorative justice programs in Boulder County. These programs focus on cultivating attitudes, skills and opportunities as part of a model that deals with incidents of crime and wrongdoing. In the past, each separate organization has used its own resources in the time-intensive process of training and employing quality volunteers. Using Millennium Trust funds, the programs will work together to accomplish comprehensive volunteer training that will benefit multiple restorative justice practitioners and programs.

Volunteer Connection    $8,000
The Volunteer Connection works to connect people's talent and skills to local nonprofits. Using the right volunteers can be a way for local community groups to achieve more than their slim budgets would seem to provide alone. Millennium Trust support will fund the cost of one standard computer station, including a laptop computer and LCD projector, as part of an outreach effort. This additional technology will enable the Volunteer Connection to broaden and strengthen its reach in the community.

Women's Wilderness Institute    $8,000
The Women's Wilderness Institute is one of few programs in Boulder County specially designed to meet the developmental needs of teen girls through getting them outside for wilderness-based programs. Funding is for the purchase of one 12-passenger van for the Girl's Wilderness Program, which will allow the Institute to provide safe reliable transportation for its growing programs.

Millennium Trust 2004 Grants Total: $80,375.
