What is Multiple Sclerosis?
Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system attacks the protective myelin sheaths that surround the nerve cells of the brain and spinal cord (a process called demyelination), resulting in damaged areas that are unable to transmit nerve impulses. MS can cause a variety of symptoms, including changes in sensation, visual problems, muscle weakness, depression, and difficulties with coordination and speech. MS has generally been considered an adult disease, but there are approximately 8,000-10,000 children who have MS, and another 10,000-15,000 who have experienced symptoms of the disease.

The Sue Burke MS Youth Foundation

Our Mission
Founded in 2006, The Sue Burke MS Youth Foundation is a donor-advised fund of The Community Foundation. The SBMSYF is dedicated to creating awareness about youth affected by MS, offering support and assistance to those affected, and promoting a healthy and active lifestyle while living with MS. Beginning in 2007, the Foundation will offer college scholarships to affected youth, as well as youth programming focused on active living. Ultimately, the Foundation hopes to serve as a resource center for youth and the families of youth challenged by MS.

About Sue Burke
Sue BurkeSue Burke was diagnosed with MS in 2003. As a tennis coach, triathlete, and marathoner, Sue was determined that this diagnosis would not relegate her to spectator status in life and athletics. With the help and incredible generosity of the local community, Sue has been able to access a network of gifted health professionals and create a support system that has enabled her to live her passions. She wholeheartedly believes that remaining active has helped offset many of the potential symptoms and physical deterioration associated with MS. Through the foundation, Sue hopes to share this message and assist youth affected by MS to create lifestyles in which they can truly LIVE with MS.
