The Wildlife Legacy Trust
of the Community Foundation Serving Boulder County is
dedicated to providing for the preservation and protection
of wildlife and their habitats, as well as the rescue
and care of injured and orphaned wildlife.
Through organizations that support healthy
ecosystems, rehabilitate wildlife, and educate and advocate
on behalf of wildlife, the Wildlife Legacy Trust strives
to ensure balanced wildlife ecology in Boulder County
and the surrounding communities in the face of increased
growth and urbanization.
The Challenge
Wildlife in the Rocky Mountain region face
increasing challenges to their survival. The rapid urbanization
of our rural and previously uninhabited areas is eliminating
wildlife habitats at a terrifying rate. Many species
simply have no place to go. Even in wilderness areas,
human recreation puts additional stress on animals,
which creates many negative effects on their well-being.
Increased foot and bicycle traffic on trails and in
mountain parks has an enormous impact on wildlife.
The wildlife in the increasingly urban areas
face even more difficult problems than habitat loss.
Wild animals sustain injuries and often death primarily
from encounters with domestic pets, contact with automobiles
and collisions with buildings.
Domestic pets are by far the prime source
of wildlife injury and death. House cats catch millions
of wild animals annually (as many as 200 million nationwide
by one account). If pets are not vaccinated, they can
transfer diseases such as canine and feline distemper.
Automobiles cause a huge amount of wildlife
mortality and injury. Increasing traffic, high speeds,
and construction of roads in rural areas take a devastating
toll on wild animals.
Collisions with buildings are particularly
hazardous for birds. An enormous number of birds slam
into picture windows daily. As more and larger houses
are built in rural areas, the frequency of structure
collisions increases dramatically.
The Opportunity
The Wildlife Legacy Trust believes that it
is the responsibility of the citizens of the Rocky Mountain
community to ensure the preservation of our wildlife
and their ecosystems.
Through a donation to the Wildlife Legacy
Trust you are helping injured and orphaned wildlife,
the preservation of habitat and species, and education
and wildlife advocacy programs that will leave an enduring
legacy.
The Wildlife Legacy Trust is an endowed fund
of the The Community Foundation Serving Boulder County.
All donations are income tax deductible and are directed
to organizations that are focused primarily in Boulder
County and Northern Colorado.
The fund awards grants to selected nonprofit
wildlife-related groups on a competitive basis, based
on recommendations from an advisory board of community
members and wildlife experts.
