The Community Foundation at Twenty Years

Nestled away in the open fields of Boulder County lives the Colorado Horse Rescue. A truly unique nonprofit organization, the Colorado Horse Rescue is home to dozens of unwanted, neglected, and abused horses. Some are old, and some are young, but all help make the Horse Rescue a place that The Community Foundation happily offers grant money.

Being so close to the Flatirons and having the advantage of such beautiful natural landscapes, the people of Boulder County are notoriously active and live healthy lifestyles. However, hidden within the communities of the County are a large number of teenagers struggling with body image issues and eating disorders. For this reason, psychotherapist Carmen Cool founded the Boulder Youth Body Alliance, an organization to which The Community Foundation proudly grants funds.

With the gorgeous flatirons, numerous outdoor trails, and pedestrian-heavy streets, Boulder County shines as one of the most bike-accessible areas of the nation. However, along with the opportunity to ride a bike freely on roads and paths comes the responsibility of knowing bike rules and care. That’s where Community Cycles comes in. Sue Prant helps run the community bike shop, which also features bicycle advocacy and outreach.

Philanthropy comes in all shapes and sizes. It can be as simple as a donation to a national charity, or as committed as 40 hours a week of volunteer work. One person who has a vested interest in giving back on both a global and a local scale is Helen Gemmill. Gemmill opened Donor Advised Fund with The Community Foundation, and is also the organization’s Board Chair (April 2010-April 2011). However, it’s her philanthropic journey that gives those titles more impact and meaning.

Jon Krakauer climbed Mount Everest, an adventure he detailed in his best-selling novel Into Thin Air. When he wrote Into the Wild, Krakauer investigated the journey of a young man who dropped everything and travelled to the West after he graduated college. But in 2007, Krakauer’s eye turned in a different direction and left him with a new view of life that none of his outdoor experiences had thus far.
