Gendercrossing Author Deirdre McCloskey to Speak in Boulder Nov. 15
Contact: Margaret Katz, (303) 442-0436
Sept. 12, 2002

Gendercrossing author Deirdre McCloskey, a distinguished professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, will speak on "Deirdre After Crossing: The Normal Life of a Former Guy" at a benefit for The Open Door Fund in Boulder on Nov. 15.

McCloskey will speak at the seventh annual Monsoon dinner and auction to be held at the Spice of Life Event Center, 5706 Arapahoe Road. A cash bar and a silent auction begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m.

Proceeds will go to The Open Door Fund, a permanent endowment of The Community Foundation Serving Boulder County, to benefit the county's gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community and its allies.

Until 1995 McCloskey was "Donald." A Harvard graduate -- she wishes it was Radcliffe -- she was tenured in economics and history at the University of Chicago, and taught for 19 years at the University of Iowa. She is now a University of Illinois at Chicago Distinguished Professor of Economics, History and English.

McCloskey has written a dozen books and about 200 articles on economics, history, philosophy, statistical theory, literary criticism, and gender studies. Her book "Crossing" was a New York Times Notable Book in 1999. She describes herself as a postmodern, quantitative, free-market, feminist, Episcopalian, Midwestern, gendercrossing, literary woman.

The Open Door Fund is Boulder County's largest funder of GLBT needs. Recipients of Open Door Fund grants have included the Boulder Valley Safe Schools Coalition; OASOS; Teens Inc.; Boulder County Aging Services Foundation; Boulder Valley Women's Health Clinic; Boulder County Safehouse; Boulder Gay & Lesbian Film Festival; the CU-Boulder Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Resource Center; and the Boulder and Longmont chapters of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG).

Tickets are $85 per person and are partially tax-deductible. For reservations or information call The Community Foundation Serving Boulder County at (303) 442-0436, e-mail info@commfound.org or visit www.commfound.org/opendoor.html.
