How to be a community hero
Give something back to the place
we know and love |
By Colleen Conant
Sunday, December 3, 2006
The Culture of Giving sprang forth from a conversation
among friends who love this place. Today it is a full-fledged
project of The Community Foundation. Its mission is to
encourage grass-roots philanthropy and to develop a community-wide
ethic of giving back. Today through Dec. 9 is Culture
of Giving Week throughout Boulder County.
Since its inception in 2001, I have written about the
Culture of Giving wearing three different hats: as editor
and publisher of the Daily Camera, as a volunteer board
member, for The Community Foundation and, now, as a new
staff member at The Community Foundation. I am as passionate
about the concept today as I was five years ago. And,
thanks to our Culture of Giving partners, the Daily Camera
and Sterling-Rice Group, more and more citizens are engaged
with the idea of giving back to the community they love.
Culture of Giving is all about sharing, a trait we are
meant to learn as children. Remember those playground
admonitions to "play with others" and to "share
our toys?" Many of us learned to give back by designating
a portion of our allowance for a Sunday school offering.
In these small yet profound ways, we learned about a world
larger than our own and that, by sharing, we could make
a difference in the life of a friend or a stranger.
As adults, we run across people, places and causes about
which we care deeply. By sharing our energies and our
resources, we enrich our giving experience and help transform
the place we love. That creates a true culture of giving.
During the next week, we all have the chance to jump on
the Culture of Giving bandwagon. Select a local nonprofit
that's doing work you endorse and support it with your
time and your dollars. If you're not sure how or where
to give, log on to cultureofgiving.org to get more information
about hundreds of local nonprofits.
To celebrate the good works being done by nonprofits throughout
the community, attend the Culture of Giving student art
show at The Dairy Center. Come see how talented student
artists depict the good works of local nonprofits in this
extraordinary and inspirational show. It's open to the
public from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Be a local hero. Give back to this place we all love.
