Ageism and Abuse In Later Life
Wednesday, August 13, 2008
American society has been described as maintaining a stereotypical and often
negative perception of older adults that is readily apparent in such areas
as language, media, and humor. In understanding abuse in later life we must
start by examining our ageist attitudes and how elder abuse is a social
justice issue, along with all other "isms" that oppress, discriminate
against and marginalize others. This seminar introduces how the concept of
Ageism is closely tied with abuse in later life. Presented by Tsunemi
Maehara Rooney, Counseling Program Director at SPAN.
SPAN and the Immigration Debate
Wednesday, September 10, 2008
Join this presentation/discussion led by SPAN Immigrant Services Outreach
Committee that will look at the current immigration debate and its effect on
immigrant clients and their experiences of violence-both by an abusive
partner and an anti-immigrant system. We will look at recent legislation
and the impact it has had on immigrant clients seeking protection, and the
ways in which SPAN continues to seek justice for all victims of domestic
violence regardless of immigration status.
