Sounds from flutes, violins, mandolins, pianos, electric guitars, and singers floated out into the hallway from behind different practice room doors. Teachers snapped their fingers to set the beat and could be heard saying, "OK, let's take it again from here." Backpacks were piled on top of the lobby couches, and above and around the sound of busy feet could be heard all over the building. The feel was distinctly "kid," and the time was after-school music lessons at Rocky Mountain Center for Musical Arts.
As a former music kid, I love visiting [6]RMCMA [6]. I was there yesterday with Fifty 10 Photography to snap photos for outreach materials. We caught the action and were grateful for the confident young musicians who let us horn in (no pun intended!) on their lessons. The whole experience took me back to the fun of learning music and how it shaped who I am. It is exciting and comforting to me that, with so many music and arts programs struggling for funding, a community gem is right here in Boulder County.
RMCMA [6] has been around for thirteen years and joyfully occupies an old church building on the corner of Baseline and Harrison Roads in Lafayette. (It is just down the road from WOW! Children's Museum.) Both children and adults take lessons and participate in ensembles, and RMCMA hosts great guest artist concerts too. Recently RMCMA [6]and Colorado Music Festival [7] announced that they are exploring an exciting merger. These two healthy organizations have collaborated extensively in the past and feel they can reach even more people even better by merging. The possibilities are endless!
The RMCMA [6] community is a vibrant music community open and accessible to everyone, devoted to the joy of music and music education, and a source of community pride.
