| The Stan
Black Award is named for one of the founders
of The Community Foundation. Stan is retired now, but
continues to be an active participant in a number of
causes, both in the Boulder area and overseas. We present
this award annually with the sponsorship of the law
firm of Hutchinson, Black & Cook and the additional
support individual donors. The award is intended to
honor an individual who, like Stan Black, has given
a lifetime of "time, treasure and talent"
to the community.
In 2000 there were two Stan
Black Award honorees: Laurence "Laurie" Paddock
and Dr. Robert McFarland
Laurence "Laurie" Paddock has served
as board president of numerous local organizations,
including Boulder Historical Society, Colorado Press
Association and the Boulder Rotary Club. He helped draft
the Boulder City charter amendment to create the present
Parks and Recreation Department, and served as chairman
of that board for three years. He currently is on the
boards of Frasier Meadows Manor, the Boulder Historical
Society/Boulder Museum of History and is a member of
the Historical Depot Relocation Task Force. During 1997-1998,
Paddock served as co-chair of Special Transit's Capital
Campaign and continues to serve on their board.
As a strong believer in early childhood development,
Dr. Robert McFarland co-founded the
Parenting Place in 1984. This group, with centers in
three locations, is dedicated to improving the way children
are raised in our community. McFarland has also worked
with People's Clinic, an organization that provides
medical care to the poor and uninsured people in Boulder
County, and helped found the Boulder Valley Women's
Health Center.
