Statement
of Purpose/Activities:
To effectively build an inclusive organization, it is
necessary to go beyond the “cultural awareness”
model present in most diversity trainings. Certainly,
awareness of various cultures is a critical first step
in any organization’s ability to address inclusiveness.
However, this approach alone does not provide the necessary
foundation for an organization to recognize and respond
to the “dominant culture norms” (i.e., norms
related to communication, conflict, alliances, and power)
which serve to impede inclusiveness.
SPAN has developed a training and consulting model which
supports organizations to move beyond simple “diversity”
and instead incorporate an integrated, sustainable anti-racist
approach to organizational inclusivity and transformation.
Anti-racism trainings challenge the historical roots
of racism, the perpetuation of “racialized”
(race-based) privilege, personal accountability, strategic
alliance building, power sharing and systemic change
to achieve racial, social and economic justice. Consultation
helps organizations incorporate these concepts into
practical, everyday life.
