What’s it like being a transgender teen in Boulder County?

On December 23, KGNU’s Morning Magazine aired a special report from Phoenix Hartman, a transgender sophomore at September High School, followed by an interview with OUT Boulder’s Education and Services Manager, Sara Connell. [Note: Listen to Phoenix’s report and Sara’s interview starting at 10:05 minutes.]

Phoenix describes his experiences of fear and depression, and eventually coming out as a transgender teen. With the help of a support system, Phoenix found his voice and is now a spokesperson on behalf of transgender equality.

Phoenix is a participant in 15 Forever, a youth civic engagement, leadership and grantmaking program of The Community Foundation. 15 Forever aims to address the needs and concerns of Boulder County youth from a youth perspective.
