The City of Boulder distributed over $2.4 million to local human service providers last year. This money comes out of the City’s General Fund – with no earmark for nonprofit organizations. The amount distributed is directed by Council members and the City Manager.

While nonprofits cannot endorse candidates, we can and should ask candidates about their attitudes on nonprofits and the services they provide. The Community Foundation and the Human Services Alliance partnered to participate in this year’s Council Candidate Community Questionnaire, sponsored by the Boulder Blue Line.

Together we submitted two questions:
  • Tell us about your experience with nonprofits.
  • If elected, what would your stance be on funding the city provides to nonprofits?

Want to see how each candidate responded? Check it out: http://www.boulderblueline.org/election-2011/. You can see the entire questionnaire or search by candidate and topic area. (Our submitted questions fall under ‘Social Services’.)

You will see that not all candidates responded to the questions and their answers differ in terms of maintaining funding, increasing funding or decreasing funding.

LET’S SHOW CANDIDATES THAT WE PAY ATTENTION AS A SECTOR! Candidates and elected officials need to hear from local nonprofits about needs we see in our community – as well as our thoughts on what’s working.
