An average of 66 families lost their homes each month in 2012 because they weren’t able to make their mortgage payments. While that amounts to an average of more than two families losing their homes each day, foreclosures actually dropped significantly on a year-over-year basis, falling 18% from 969 in 2011 to 793 in 2012.
The office of the Boulder County Public Trustee tracks monthly foreclosure data going back to 1995; there were just 126 foreclosures that first year. The number of foreclosures in the county during that time period peaked in 2009 at 1,441. Foreclosures have fallen each year since then, this year returning to roughly 2006 levels.
