For Hy Harris, Principal at EKS&H, partnering with The Community Foundation Serving Boulder County is a smart investment. “Since EKS&H got involved with the foundation in 2008, I’ve always thought that there’s no penny wasted in support of all they do,” he said.
From the standpoint of being meaningfully engaged in your community, Harris believes that supporting The Community Foundation is a great opportunity for business owners and individuals to spend their dollars wisely, “knowing that someone who has the knowledge and the background of all the different needs and nonprofits in Boulder County is directing your dollars to where it will have the most impact.”
After EKS&H – a Denver-based public accounting firm – opened its Boulder office in 2007, Harris met President Josie Health and learned about The Community Foundation. “Right away, I liked the idea that the support we, as a firm, gave to the foundation would go to various organizations within the Boulder community – my adopted home.
“At EKS&H, we feel passionate about supporting the communities in which we work, but we also know that we don’t necessarily have the best information about where our money should go, and who needs it most. By partnering with The Community Foundation, we were able to make a difference through people who know much more than we do.”
Harris recalled The Community Foundation’s response to flood relief one year ago.
“A lot of us here were affected by the flood in one way or another,” he said. “As a firm, we were evacuated and closed for a few days to avoid being caught in the flood, and to help alleviate downtown traffic while cleanup efforts were happening. We certainly weren’t the only business that was closed for the same reason and, for us, the effect was negligible. But The Community Foundation was able to help the many businesses and individuals who were much more severely affected by the flood.”
Continued Harris, “Many business people in this community are involved with the foundation in some capacity, serving on the board or on committees. I always tell people that it’s a really great way to get involved in our community, to meet other business people, and to feel good about contributing.
“Being active in our community also contributes to the morale of the firm. We take pride in being a supporter of The Community Foundation. To me, I think that’s the best part…and that I’ve never met anyone who works for the foundation whom I didn’t enjoy and respect.”
