The Cumming family, making a difference locally.
“Making a difference in your community isn’t just in the realm of the elite,” says Boulderite Sarah Cumming, who donated her government stimulus check to Community Foundation Boulder County.
“My husband, Erik, and I are fortunate to still be employed. We haven’t taken a huge financial hit like so many others have. But we know there are a lot of families and organizations that could really use some money to get through this pandemic.”
Sarah admits that she and her husband – who just welcomed their baby, Lilly, in August 2020 – considered saving their $1,200.
“Sure, that’d be nice,” she says. “But through this whole pandemic, and with so much happening in our world that’s not positive, we’ve been trying to focus on the silver linings – and during the holidays, seeing so many people really struggling, our hearts went out to them.
“We wanted to do something out of gratitude that the pandemic hasn’t affected us in the same way.”
So Sarah reached out to her moms’ Facebook group on New Year’s Eve, stating her intention to donate her stimulus check as a way to encourage others to do the same.
“We wanted to keep it local,” she adds. “And we wanted our donation to go as far as possible. That’s why we chose the Community Foundation, knowing that foundation staff is tuned in where the needs in our community are greatest.”
Thank you, Sarah and Erik! Together, we accomplish more than we do alone.
