Among the first Donor-Advised Funds established at the Community Foundation Boulder County was the Leo F. and Ina M. Wellborn Family Fund.
“Both my parents were really good, industrious people,” says daughter Bev Dare. “Both of them were really proud of this community, and they wanted to find a way to contribute – a way to give back.”
According to Bev, her parents moved from Dodge City, Kansas, to Boulder in 1956 where they were the owners of Wellborn Machine Co. until Leo’s retirement in 1998. When Leo passed away in 2000, Bev helped her mother continue managing the family fund.
“She was always interested in supporting families with children, and supporting women in abusive situations,” recalls Bev. “To this day, proceeds from the fund benefit families and children.”
While Bev lives in Lakewood, she came to know the Community Foundation through the fund her parents established. “The more I learned about the foundation, the more I impressed I was with the breadth of organizations it supports – from the arts to education – and the opportunities available to fundholders to personally visit nonprofits and agencies to learn more about their work first-hand.”
