It’s not just your imagination — portions of the county are growing in population, and continue to grow.
The Community Foundation’s TRENDS report tracks key indicators about demographic statistics and quality-of-life issues in Boulder County.
The City of Boulder (population: 102,760) from 2000 to 2013 grew by 4 percent, a reflection of how built-out it already was near the turn of the century, and about three decades of policies that prohibited high-rise apartment buildings and dense mountain sprawl. Density in the city dominates a lot of the development conversations in 2015.
Over that same period the entire Town of Erie (population: 20,109) grew by 200 percent, doubling in size on its Boulder County portion (about half the town is also rapidly expanding across the county line in Weld County.) The City of Longmont (population: 90,227), almost all of which lies in Boulder County, grew by 25 percent, the Town of Superior (population: 12,833) grew by 38 percent and Lafayette (population: 26,685) grew by 14 percent.
With new housing projects primarily outside of the City of Boulder, and a healthy economy offering employment opportunities, the county’s population grew by close to 10,000 from 2011 to 2013 alone. Over the same time period, the City of Boulder’s population expanded by 3,281 residents — a 3 percent increase from 2011.
The new TRENDS report, The Community Foundation’s biennial indicators report, will be published this summer. If your business, civic or nonprofit organization would like to schedule a presentation about TRENDS, please contact Erika Stutzman, at erika@commfound.org.
