Giving thanks

Thanksgiving is a traditional time to show gratitude for all that we have. Increasingly, it’s also seen as the start of the holiday shopping season.

Economists note that consumers are growing in confidence — and that is expected to bring a jolly season to retailers. The National Retail Federation expects holiday sales to increase by 4.1 percent this year. That’s better than the 3.1 percent growth rate last year, and better than the 2.9 percent average growth rate over the last 10 years. Here in Colorado, forecasters predict an even more robust shopping season.

If you’re feeling grateful this year, consider sharing your gratitude. Not all of our neighbors have benefitted from the slowly recovering economy. In fact, local food banks and pantries have been reporting even higher demands. Consider joining the Boulder Road Runners on Thursday morning for a 5K benefitting Community Food Share.

Or join in the Louisville Turkey Trot 5K benefiting Sister Carmen.
