Grantee Spotlight: The Immigrant Legal Center of Boulder County

For nearly 20 years, The Immigrant Legal Center of Boulder County has provided direct legal assistance to Colorado immigrants. Founded in 2005 by Executive Director and attorney Laurel Herndon, The Immigrant Legal Center’s mission is to expand access to affordable and reliable legal services for the immigrant community, to educate the immigrant population about U.S. Law, and to educate the general public about legal difficulties encountered by immigrants in this country.
“Some of the biggest challenges immigrants encounter in this country are the barriers to work authorization due to our broken immigration system,” says Maria Gordillo, Director of Community Engagement at The Immigrant Legal Center of Boulder County. “Employment and economic challenges have made it difficult for many to afford legal representation... we offer substantial discounts based on income to make sure anyone who comes to our office can afford immigration legal assistance. Everyone leaves our office with the tools needed to navigate and understand their immigration status.”
In 2023, The Immigrant Legal Center was a recipient of Community Foundation Boulder County’s BRAVO Fund and Community Trust Fund. Funding from grants like these enables The Immigrant Legal Center of Boulder County to offer support for low-income families on programs like Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) renewals, citizenship, family based immigration, and more. Their work to advocate for and support local families as well as educate the broader community on these issues continues to move the needle on immigration reform at the local, state, and federal levels, and we’re proud to partner with them on this important work.

About the BRAVO Fund

Every year, the BRAVO Fund supports organizations that improve the quality of life for Boulder County Latinos. With a mission to promote social justice, strengthen opportunities for Latino leadership, and empower Latinos to engage in philanthropy that benefits their own communities, the BRAVO fund raises money and distributes grants to support Boulder County’s broader Latino community.
During its last grant cycle, BRAVO distributed $13,000 to four deserving organizations including the Immigrant Legal Center of Boulder County.
