Ready to ride?

It sure doesn’t feel like typical winter weather so far this week, but Boulder’s Winter Bike to Work Day is tomorrow (Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2015). We enjoyed talking to Sue Prant, the executive director of Community Cycles, about her nonprofit’s sponsorship of Bike to Work Day during this week’s A Public Affair on KGNU. Did you miss it? You can catch a replay of it here: http://bit.ly/1JYxMdb

About 65 percent of Boulder County residents drive solo in cars to work, despite the hundreds of miles of bikeways here. A key component of the Community Foundation’s discussion with Prant was framed around how to add alternative transit to your life: It’s not just about riding a bicycle to work. Other trips during your day — to the gym, dropping the kids off at school, to the library — may add cycling into your regular routine. And if you do choose to ride to work, keep in mind: You don’t need special clothes or expensive gear to get from A to B. A gentle, moderate ride is suitable for most people. And our bodies and our environment reap the benefit.

While the summertime Bike to Work Day remains the most popular cycling event for general commuters, Wednesday’s winter event is impressively well-attended. Register here for a chance at many prizes: http://bit.ly/1BFcNuZ

Another exciting addition to Wednesday’s Winter Bike to Work Day: A major bicycle shelter in the heart of Boulder is hosting a grand opening at noon. The shelter, at Boulder Transit Center at 14th and Walnut streets, has 140 free spots for bicycle commuters. There are additional, smaller bike shelters in Boulder at  28th Street and Iris Avenue, at the Table Mesa Park-n-Ride, and at the Roosevelt Park/Eighth and Coffman Park-n-Ride in Longmont. Another Longmont shelter and a Lafayette shelter are in the works.
