Speak up for increased early learning for Boulder Valley’s at-risk kids!

The Boulder Valley School District’s 30-member Capital Improvement Planning Committee is developing recommendations to update the district’s capital needs master plan. The plan will determine projects for the district’s next capital construction bond issue.

The committee now is working to prioritize the needs and has set dates for community forums in April to get feedback.

We need advocates to attend these meetings and let the committee know that our community places a priority on high quality early childhood education, especially for Dual Language Learners and children from low-income families.

Here are some points to emphasize if you speak at one of these meetings:

·         Boulder Valley’s achievement gaps between students from low-income families and their peers remains one of the widest in the state.

·         Quality, affordable and accessible early childhood education is one of the best ways to ensure that at-risk kids get up to speed as quickly as possible.

·         Boulder Valley voters joined the District in committing to an expansion of early childhood education in the 2010 mill levy override.

·         We need to build on this commitment to our youngest, most vulnerable learners in this capital improvement bond.

·         The current need for full-day early childhood education in Boulder Valley among low-income and Latino families is strongest in East County and all Title 1 elementary schools.

·         Please expand full-day preschool and full-day Kindergarten for at-risk students.
