    The Open Door Fund Gala will be held April 11 at the St. Julien in Boulder. On March 23's "A Public Affair" on KGNU, gala guest speaker Ash Beckham and OUT Boulder Executive Director Mardi Moore join host Erika Stutzman, from The Community Foundation, to preview the celebration, and to talk about the challenges facing today's LGBT youth. The gala is the signature event of The Open Door Fund, a permanent endowment of The Community Foundation, which supports the LGBT community.

    Seth Levine of local investment firm, Foundry Group, spoke with The Community Foundation’s Morgan McMillan about how a locally grown program to encourage startup companies to give back to their communities has inspired a new worldwide movement. From the success of the Entrepreneurs Foundation of Colorado has sprung Pledge 1%, a collaborative to encourage and facilitate early-stage giving among startup companies across the globe.

    The Community Foundation discusses the winter Bike to Work Day, which is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 28. Community Cycles Executive Director Sue Prant discusses Bike to Work Day’s evolution with Trends Director Erika Stutzman. Prant will also discuss Community Cycle’s advocacy work, and the current projects designed to get commuters out of their cars and onto their bicycles.

    Isabel McDevitt, Executive Director of Bridge House – Boulder’s homeless day shelter, Elizabeth Freedman, Director of Programs at the Emergency Family Assistance Association, and Morgan McMillan, Civic Forum Director for The Community Foundation talk about local homelessness. Homelessness is not a new issue for this community. In fact, the most recent count of local homeless shows a decrease in the number of people without housing – but there’s been a renewed sense of urgency on the topic from local policymakers and media. Why is that? And how are the providers in our community responding? What can Boulder County residents do if they want to help?

    Rich Lopez, Community Foundation Trustee, will be joined by Linda Arroyo-Holstrom and Magdalena Casillas to share the work of the Boulder County Latino History Project. The project, a collaborative, grass-roots initiative, is documenting and describing the history of Latinos in our area over the past century. It is focusing on the towns of Longmont (an agricultural center), Lafayette (a coal mining community), and Boulder (shaped by commerce and the University of Colorado). Currently the group is writing a book about their findings, generating interactive computer maps showing Latino-headed households across the 20th century, and working with the county’s two school districts to produce teaching units that incorporate Latino material into the curriculum at all grade levels.
