Cultural Brokers

Cultural brokering is the act of bridging, linking or mediating among groups or persons of different cultural backgrounds for the purpose of reducing conflict or producing change.

As one of four national participants in the Knight Foundation’s Community Information Lab  (KCIL), your Community Foundation had the unique opportunity to explore what it means to create the conditions for Latino Bilingual Cultural Brokers (LBCBs) to help drive decisions locally.

Since then – following the principle "do nothing about us without us" by working with our community – the Community Foundation has taken on the challenge to nurture transformation from the inside out, both as individuals and as institutions countywide.

Inspired by cultural brokers, we have expanded our TRENDS Report far beyond our biennial community indicators report on the social, economic, and environmental health of Boulder County. Our TRENDS Reporting Initiative now also includes:
  • a podcast on KGNU Community Radio, anchored by a Latina bilingual reporter;
  • a reporting fellowship, in partnership with KGNU, that includes cultural brokers in its inaugural cohort;
  • a TRENDS Diary that tells first-person stories of connection and problem solving during the pandemic both on our website and on KGNU; and
  • a new Solutions Fund aimed at addressing issues raised by the increased reporting.
