About the Boulder County Wildfire Fund

On December 30, 2021, the Marshall Fire damaged or destroyed over 1,000 homes in southeastern Boulder County, making it the most destructive wildfire in Colorado state history. Within hours, Community Foundation Boulder County created the Boulder County Wildfire Fund to support the immediate, short-, and long-term needs of the community.

As of January 2026, 86% of damaged and destroyed homes have a building permit, and 78% of homes have been rebuilt.

Community Foundation Boulder County will release an updated report on the Boulder County Wildfire Fund in 2026, including an outline of financial information, a summary of grants made, and compiled stories of community recovery.

Initiative Information

In partnership with a local, volunteer advisory committee, the community foundation has taken a people-first, trauma-aware approach to the allocation and distribution of donations made to the Boulder County Wildfire Fund.

Now, over four years after the Marshall Fire, all of the $43 million raised has been distributed.

As Boulder County’s trusted philanthropic partner for over 30 years, Community Foundation Boulder County works closely with our government, business, and nonprofit partners to address the immediate, short- and long-term needs of the community, and fill gaps that are beyond the capacity of the community. Our experience has shown us the importance of deep local relationships in meeting short- and long-term community needs in a crisis with equity, transparency, and integrity.

How were Decisions Made?

The Wildfire Fund worked with our government and nonprofit partners to disperse the funds to support our community. An advisory committee of volunteers was created to help guide grantmaking and provide guidance on the use of funds and grant recommendations to our board.
