There are all kinds of ways to give back to our community, and if you’re Noel Culberson, making a difference involves stepping into a boxing ring.

“I’ll be joined by other local businesses in officially sanctioned amateur boxing matches to raise money for charity,” says Noel, Director and Senior PIM Portfolio Manager with Trailhead Wealth Management in Louisville, and a member of the foundation’s volunteer investment committee. “My wife, Shina – who fought in Founder Fights 1 – is helping me train!”
For this Boulder native, giving back to our community by donating to the Community Foundation is an obvious choice. “Living here 51 years, I’ve known about the foundation for a long time. I’ve known [former foundation President] Josie Health and went to junior high school with her daughter – I also went to high school with [Vice President of Philanthropic Services] Margaret Katz.
“So I’ve pretty much known the foundation since its inception, and I’m impressed by its broad-based mandate to not only support and strengthen Boulder County nonprofits with grants, but also the foundation’s emphasis to support professional advisors and charitable donors to direct their resources wisely.”
According to Noel, several of his clients hold Donor-Advised Funds through the Community Foundation – and he’s inspired his friends and family to donate to the foundation, as well. “Some of my friends have even relied on the Community Foundation to help remember lost loved ones through charitable giving,” he adds.
As for the upcoming boxing match, “I’m still deciding whether I’m extra crazy to do this, or just crazy,” he laughs. “All the participants are older and nowhere near being professional boxers. But we’ve all committed to training at least two days a week at The Corner Boxing Club with Carrie Barry, a national champion and former captain of Team USA.”
Concludes Noel, “I have volunteered with the Community Foundation for a number of years because they strive to make our community a better place for all residents. I’m proud to be a part of that.”
Regardless of Noel’s performance in the ring – a total of three one-minute rounds overseen by referees and judges – he’s already a winner in our book!

Donor-Advised Funds: the Community Foundation advantage
“Donor-Advised Funds allow donors to make a charitable contribution, receive an immediate tax benefit, and then recommend grants from the fund over time.”
“Making a difference in your community isn’t just in the realm of the elite,” says Boulderite Sarah Cumming, who donated her government stimulus check to Community Foundation Boulder County.
Sometimes, the name says it all: Margaret’s Hope Fund not only brought hope and meaning to its namesake, the late Margaret Jonikas, while she was alive; the Donor-Advised Fund established at the Community Foundation continues to inspire hope in her memory today. “My mother was the biggest donor to the fund,” says Joe Jonikas, […]
