For Boulder County Clerk and Recorder Hillary Hall and her husband, Tim Enwall – a 25-year veteran of high-tech business management – giving back to our community reflects their shared values.

“My giving story starts with the fact that I was born eight blocks from your office,” laughs Tim. “I grew up in Boulder, my mom was on the city council, and many of her friends were mayors or fellow council members.

“So not only did I learn to ride my bike here, I also learned about responsibility to community from a young age,” adds Tim, whose father was a district court judge here, too.

“The second part of my giving story is that my grandparents – of German and Norwegian descent – were always giving back in their town,” he says. “I really admired them, they were icons in my life. I watched them bring their values to life by supporting their local library, the YMCA and other causes, and by being humble citizens.

“I’ve also been inspired by people like Warren Buffet, who – despite being a multi-billionaire – is an incredibly humble guy. Beyond making sure his family is comfortable, his wealth is going back to various causes. That’s an influence for me in terms of not having the bulk of your wealth go just to our kids, but back to society, too.”

Hillary’s giving story can also be traced back to the influence of her mother. “She was the quintessential volunteer, she spent so much time giving back to community. I’ve had that example from a very early age.”

Hillary, who also grew up in Boulder, is inspired to give back to the community that she feels privileged to live in. “I am where I am today because of experiences I’ve had here in Boulder and Boulder County,” she says. “That’s also why I serve my community through public office.

“Both Tim and I are strong believers that there’s no such thing as the self-made woman or man. We’re all made on the backs of society – like taxpayers paying for schools and after-school programs, and policymakers encouraging businesses to give back to community.”

What motivated Hillary and Tim to work with the Community Foundation to create a legacy of giving?

“For me, it’s that the Community Foundation is data-driven, and tuned in to today’s issues and what future issues might be,” says Tim. “It feels good to turn over the work and labors of our lives and careers to a trusted foundation that is going to continue giving that money away, long after we’re gone. It was an easy choice, and a decision that makes sense.

“The Community Foundation is the only philanthropic organization I know of that focuses on all of Boulder County – and does so by collecting data, really listening to the community, and solving different problems at different times, depending on what’s the highest community priority.”

Concludes Hillary, “I have a great deal of confidence that by working with the Community Foundation, we can do the most to make our community better. As we continue to work and grow our business, it’s good to know that we’ve already made this decision.

“We believe in the foundation’s value-system, and its focus on listening, inclusivity and empathy. The foundation’s leadership and cultivation of that value system give us confidence that our giving will make a difference.”
