Grantee Spotlight: Camp Indigo

Founded on the belief that transgender and gender diverse kids deserve a joyful summer day camp experience, Camp Indigo offers just that—a summer camp for trans, nonbinary, and gender expansive youth ages 5-17.

“We are a summer camp for trans youth, not about trans youth,” says Andrew Kramer, Executive Director of Camp Indigo. “So much of the narrative around the trans youth experience is focused on state and federal legislation and healthcare, and though both are wildly important, that doesn’t leave much room or opportunity for just being a kid.”

The camp welcomes participants into a community that honors their intersectional identities and offers a chance to simply play, connect, and experience real joy.

“Receiving an Open Door Fund grant was a real green light for us,” says Andrew. “It meant that we—trans folks supporting trans youth—had the support of Community Foundation Boulder County (which is huge!).” With the additional resources provided through the community foundation’s Open Door Fund, Camp Indigo was able to add a third week to their Boulder program, effectively serving another 125 camper weeks.

Now in their 11th year with camp locations in Oakland, Boulder, Akron, and Austin, Camp Indigo proudly provides 1,050 weeks of camp to youth from across 23 different states and employs nearly 70 trans and gender expansive employees, including 10 former campers!

Camp Indigo believes that play is the gateway to a thriving, equitable, and inclusive community and life, and we’re proud to support their work to create community for trans youth, bring more joy to their lives, and ensure everyone in Boulder County experiences a life of opportunity and fulfillment.

Camp Indigo was awarded an Open Door Fund grant from Community Foundation Boulder County in 2024.
