Don’t stop reading just because I typed “political…”
How differently we react to politics here in the United States since November 2016, compared to just a few short years ago. Sometimes we have to remind ourselves that politics includes policy. In fact, according to Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, the definition of political is:
1a: of or relating to government, a government, or the conduct of government
b: of, relating to, or concerned with the making as distinguished from the administration of governmental policy
This spring, I had the amazing opportunity to assume the role of a lobbyist for a day in Washington D.C.; as a self-employed immigrant entrepreneur, and as President of
NAHREP Denver, it was a truly impactful experience for me.
My career is real estate, and my background is banking and mortgage. Every day – as I work with my clients – I am reminded that my job is to use my experience, my network, my connections, and my cultural understanding to better my community. As such, I welcomed the opportunity to introduce a small group of colleagues to Representative Gary Palmer to share with him the purpose and accomplishments of the largest business association in the United States focused on the Hispanic/Latino market [the
National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals (NAHREP)]. I asked him to consider our data and our impact as crucial to the opportunities and growth potential of the economy as a whole: it was a proud career moment, and my way of taking the 7th discipline of the
Hispanic Wealth Project to heart:
be politically savvy because public policy matters.
Understanding public policy sounds more intimidating than it is. It’s imperative that we understand our local policies, and who makes the rules. For example, it would be spectacular for students to know how changes in student loan financing happen. And it would strengthen our community to learn the commission and advisory positions that are open, and how they enable local change. Even serving on your own HOA board is great way to better understand and participate in budgeting and
Robert’s Rules of Order. As consumers and residents across Boulder County, it can be all too easy to be reactive and judgmental, instead of getting involved in the many opportunities to make positive change.
For my part, through NAHREP Denver, I took the opportunity to participate this year in speaking for Coloradans unable to lobby for themselves. NAHREP continues to speak out in support of homeownership opportunities for underserved communities across the nation…we believe that FHA has a wonderful purpose. Did you know that Latinos represent $1.4T in purchasing power, and a financial powerhouse as large as Australia?
It’s crucial that we understand how policies affect our community – and to really understand current community data, it’s important to compare and review previous years’ data. That’s where the Community Foundation’s
TRENDS Report comes in, serving as a trusted resource for nonprofits, agencies, and other influencers and decision-makers in Boulder County and beyond. I often hear the TRENDS report referenced when policies are being made and considered.
In a word, TRENDS helps shape policies that affect all sectors of our shared community. Let’s continue to share TRENDS data and analyses to make informed decisions and improve our community together!
Stay tuned for the October launch of the 2017-19 edition of our Boulder County TRENDS Report, filled with community insights and stories, data, and recommendations. Soon available on our website, we can’t wait to share with you our new searchable database of more than 150 indicators of our community’s social, economic and environmental health: because through informed decision-making, we inspire ideas, ignite action, and mobilize diverse resources to improve the quality of life for everyone in Boulder County. Together, we accomplish more than we do alone.
