Ready for the 2016 elections yet? Put November out of your head for a moment, and consider a critical upcoming date: Monday, Jan. 4, 2016.
That’s the deadline to register as either a Democrat or a Republican if you intend to participate in the March caucuses in Colorado. The caucus is critical process in selecting who the state’s delegates will support for U.S. President in 2016. Caucuses are also a traditional way the major parties select their candidates at the national, state and local level too.
The Colorado leaders of Common Cause will talk about democracy, voting laws, campaign finance, and what it means to live in a “purple state” like Colorado during a presidential election year. Join Common Cause’s Executive Director Elena Nunez and Associate Director Katie Dahl on KGNU’s “A Public Affair” at 8:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 28 as they discuss these issues and more with TRENDS Director Erika Stutzman, with The Community Foundation Serving Boulder County.
The Community Foundation’s TRENDS report shows that registered Democrats outnumber registered Republicans in Boulder County — both parties are losing ground as independent voters increase in number. From 2013 to 2014, registered Democrats fell from 98,920 to
96,798 in Boulder County. Registered Republicans fell from 46,265 to 44,316. At the same time, the county’s registered voters who were unaffiliated grew from 93,916 to 97,129 — that’s 40 percent of the county’s registered voters!
Unaffiliated people can sign up with a party to participate in the caucuses — and voters can switch parties, too. But they must do so by Jan. 4, a date that is fast approaching.
