When I’m in downtown Boulder in between meetings or with a few moments to spare (and I’ve found a good parking spot!), I often go into the courtyard at the Community Foundation.
It’s a walled garden with a bubbling fountain at the center, with just enough shade and flowers, and one of my favorite places. It’s peaceful and calm and special.
It’s not a place that just Community Foundation staff or board members like me can hang out. Like the foundation, this is a place for all of us. I invite you to come and see it.
And when you do, take a look at the names inscribed in stone on the east side of the courtyard. These are donors who are members of our Legacy Society: people who have left the foundation in their wills and estate plans. I’m excited that my name will be in the next batch of names to be inscribed.
A few years ago my husband and I went to update our will. It took some time to wade through all the questioning and paperwork that comes with it. It certainly is one of those exercises that make you think – about your health, your family, and the things you love.
We made a bequest to the Community Foundation because we love this community. For me personally, my involvement with the Community Foundation has been an amazing journey of growth, inspiration, and support. I’ve met so many people from so many different parts of this county, all working to better this place we all call home.
But even more, I believe that the Community Foundation is a place where goodness lives. It might not always have all the answers. But the intention of working for all in our community, of striving to include everyone in strengthening Boulder County, is where I want my own good intentions to live for a long time.
There’s room for you – and for everyone in Boulder County – in this courtyard.
No matter what your economic situation, everyone needs a will and anyone can leave a bequest. It’s a lasting way to express your values and be part of your community beyond your lifetime.
Please take me up on my invitation and spend a minute of peace in this lovely place. We hope it inspires you to think about the people and things you love and value.

June 19 was the foundation’s annual Legacy Society Reception. We were graced by the talents of poet, Elizabeth Robinson, who wrote a poem inspired by and for the occasion. Learn more and listen to her read “A Creek Runs Through Us.”
