“A Public Affair” features ELPASO, advances Latino parent revolution

According to The Community Foundation’s 2015 TRENDS report, the achievement gap between Latino and Anglo students is wider in Boulder County than just about anywhere else in Colorado.

In response, we’re working directly with Latino parents to help fight this trend. In the last two years, through a new program – Engaged Latino Parents Advancing School Outcomes (ELPASO) – we’ve reached more than 1,600 Latino parents of 0- to 5-year-olds; and trained 50 Latino parent leaders who have hosted more than 200 house meetings and trained hundreds more parents.

On Monday, May 23, Chris Barge – who oversees ELPASO in his role as Director of our School Readiness Initiative – hosts “A Public Affair,” our monthly radio program in collaboration with KGNU Radio. His guests are two of the Latino parents at the heart of this Latino parent revolution: Veronica Sangabriel, one of ELPASO’s three School Readiness Coordinators, and Chely Meraz, a Latino parent leader who has been transformed by ELPASO and has helped transform other parents through ELPASO.

This month’s show – “Building a Latino Parent Revolution” – airs at 8:30 a.m. If you missed it, you can listen to the podcast anytime.
