Bilingual community liaison finds satisfaction delivering food to families

El mensaje que sigue es en español

Dear TRENDS Diary,

I am the community liaison at Manhattan Middle school and I provide information to the families so they can stay connected with the school. Currently, during the pandemic we are distributing food to the households of the students on Tuesdays and Thursdays, since there are families that can’t pick it up from the school for various reasons, for example, having a broken-down car, being unable to buy gas or because they are sick.

I am one of 15 community liaisons that deliver food to 400 families out of different BVSD schools. We also have teachers, parents and school staff that volunteer their time making deliveries.

The initiative of delivering food was started by our boss, Ari Gerzon. BVSD will continue making deliveries through the 16 of July so parents have one less thing to worry about.

The most challenging moment was after spring break, because it was the time when many parents realized they would lose their jobs. It usually takes me three hours to deliver food but that day it took me six hours because the families felt the need to vent and chat.

We have partnered with Impact on Education, which is contributing gift cards, and with Period Pads, which has donated feminine hygiene products. My school organized a fundraiser where the majority of teachers donated 30% of their federal stimulus to distribute among the families.

When we share food, we get to see the families, we chat and, for a moment, we forget about all of the problems. For ten minutes, they feel like someone cares about them and that they belong to a community.

This is a beautiful initiative and I feel tremendous satisfaction helping them.

Querido diario TRENDS,
