Dear TRENDS Diary,
I was going through a tough time like we all were, like we all are. All the negative news stories, this trauma and anxiety that we’re all dealing with. I was getting depressed.
I started looking around for thought leaders with positive messages. Why haven’t any of these people put out a message?
I saw a post from Somerset McCarthy, whose brother played football at CU. It basically said, ‘Let’s do something.’ We started talking.
We spoke about helping 100 families, maybe 1,000 families. Then we decided to focus in: Let’s find three families that we can help super fast.
We put out a post but nobody responded to it. Out of the blue got a call from a friend I went to high school with. He pitched in to help Somerset and me get started, but we had a ton of help.
This friend that works with the City of Boulder sent me 10 families and their shopping list.
We posted it and asked who wanted to help. So many people jumped in. Tracy Eliasson jumped in; she built a really cool infrastructure to help manage things.
When we got those 10 families taken care of, we got the next set of 10 families. Then Pinewood Church jumped in. Now we’ve given out almost 300 weeks worth of food.
As soon as I put myself out there, my energy went through the roof. It’s an opportunity to be part of the hope and get outside of the fear. It’s a lesson of, when we’re in that negativity and in that spirit, it really can get to us. How can we get outside our head? Giving back and helping.
