“It’s imperative to be aware, purposeful, and conversational about why and how we want to create a healthier community.”

As a self-employed real estate professional, this time of year is stressful because time away from my business affects my bottom line. At the same time, a personal responsibility shouts out in my head that my schedule should allow the opportunity to “do more” to make a difference in my community.
I recognize my privilege to be involved in activities that sometimes take place when others aren’t as available: I can attend a volunteer meeting during the day, for example – but sometimes it becomes too much. There’s a sacrifice that many of us pay that affects our families when we commit to too many volunteer efforts. And yet, I know from my heart that my experience and expertise can impact positive change in my community. Indeed, creating space
to contribute to the Community Foundation blog every month this year has helped me question whether I’m living up to the
10 success principles of the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals® (NAHREP).
December isn’t just for eating chocolates out of my advent calendar; for me, it’s a time of reflection and planning for the new year. I’m evaluating where my time, my money, and my energy has gone this year so I can make wise decisions about 2018. My business and life plan templates already exist; but in working through the NAHREP 10 concepts with you throughout the year, I’ve decided to add them to my annual review. Since my initial challenge was for us to look at how we are living the NAHREP principles, I need to, as well. And just because we have one item in each box doesn’t mean we’re done…
It’s imperative to be aware, purposeful, and conversational about why and how we want to create a healthier community. What does that mean for you? And are your own finances in order? Have you sat down with a close companion to discuss debt or savings this year? Can you carve out more time and/or donations to give back to your community? Did you meet anyone new or learn something new about the work of the Community Foundation, and
how you can get involved?
For me, getting involved this year meant beginning new relationships with many nonprofits and other organizations around Boulder County. Especially, I am so grateful for
the work of the Community Foundation, and I have learned so much in sharing and exploring the NAHREP 10 with you. In particular, I recall our discussion on this blog about
financially supporting change-making organizations that ignite action. So in my household, we’ve started gathering ideas to make giving decisions as a family when my oldest son gets home from college.
What ideas do you have to more firmly establish your avenues of funding to support change-making organizations like the Community Foundation before the end of the year? I challenge you to give locally toward program development, training, and other efforts that inspire change toward a more resilient Boulder County for all of us.
On this shared journey, here’s my quick NAHREP 10 checklist for the year. Go ahead and add your own accomplishments!
In our shared exploration of the NAHREP 10 this year, my hope is that we’re all a little more connected to one another, a little more financially savvy, and that we’ve ignited energy and action around these important life principles! Together, we accomplish more than we do alone.
