Dear TRENDS Diary –
I am the Coordinator of the Emotional Wellness Circle of El Centro AMISTAD. We offer emotional health services free of charge to Spanish-speaking immigrants, who otherwise would not have access to these resources for different reasons like their immigration status or lack of knowledge of the language.
Our services include support groups where we talk about topics related to stress, and individual counseling in Spanish with up to 8 sessions for free. Our mission is to eradicate the stigma related to mental health because it is not a very well-known topic among the Latino community. All of our therapists and counselors are bilingual, bicultural and hold a certificate.
Currently, the Wellness Circle is focusing on the stress caused by the pandemic. In the first month, the workshops were specific. For example, we learned how to deal with a person who is having an anxiety attack.
In May, we didn’t have any workshops, but instead we created spaces for people to vent and share relaxation techniques. Throughout the pandemic, more people have had the courage to participate in a group like this, especially during the first six weeks of the crisis when there was more desperation.
Our dynamic has changed with the pandemic. Before, the counseling and the support groups were held in an office once a month. Now, both are offered weekly and online. I am the group moderator and there is always a therapist present to address the participants’ concerns.
All of us, at some point in our lives, need to get some emotional help, and there is no shame in asking for it. It’s not a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength and intelligence.
We have to treat emotional health the same way doctors would treat us for a broken leg. Therapists help us make the best decisions and guide us to a happier life.
– Leticia Abajo, as told to Silvana Munro.
Querido diario TRENDS –
